Tales From Yaquina City

Only one original building remains where the town of Yaquina City once stood.
Now known as the Mad Dog Country Tavern, this building is the original post office for Yaquina City (see map at right), which was located in Yaquina Pete’s general store.
Yaquina Pete’s Place started as a single story structure and was expanded to the two story structure we see today. All other traces of Yaquina City have disappeared.
This town was the terminus for the Oregon Pacific Railroad Company’s rail line to the coast; the
first of its kind. Its developer (a Col. Hogg) had big plans for the town which never materialized. He wanted to make it the next San Francisco.
Even though this “city” was no more that a wide spot of bank of the Yaquina River, the scrappy visionaries who built this place weren’t as easily washed away as Hogg’s dream.
Their spirit lives on here on the banks of the Yaquina River. Here are a few tales from the PU of Yaquina City.
