FALL

Well, I know it’s officially Fall. Not because the sky outside is a leaden grey and its blowing and raining, but because my wife is sitting on the couch and sipping a large steamy cup of hot cocoa.
As I sat contemplating this wonderful domestic moment I slipped into a daydream about a dreamscape I had as a young man. I dreamt of living on the Oregon coast and hunkering down in my beach cottage with a fire in the stove, a sketch book in hand, and, yes, a hot cup of cocoa in the other as the waves crashed outside.
Well, it took several decades but here I am sitting in my (almost) beach cottage daydreaming about my boyhood dreamscapes. There’s a bit more to the story however.
You see, this dream included something my mother shared with me towards the end of her life. She said that she had always wanted to move to the Oregon coast and be able to sit and watch the storms.
Mom was the one person who always believed in me and my art, so I was inclined to take in what she said. I had seen the coast and wanted to live there too. It became a goal for me to wind up on the Oregon Coast and spend my time doing art and enjoying where I live.
So, this one’s for you mom! Gusty winds, pounding surf, dark sky, driving rain... How cool! Yea, it’s Fall alright. My only regret? Tourist season is over and I didn’t bag a single one.
