The handwriting is on the wall

When an everyday expression is getting more express every day
The old expression, "The handwriting is on the wall" has been part of our vocabulary for many years. Some are surprised to learn that this phrase is based on a bible story found in the book of Daniel (chapter five). What exactly does it mean? Well, today we'd say, "The tag's on the wall dude, and it don't look good in the hood."
Daniel, chapter five, is the tale of Belshazzar, king of Babylon who throws a huge party, drinking out of the golden vessels plundered from the Jewish Temple, and "praising the gods of gold and silver…" (v. 4).
Well, God had finally had enough of this unbeliever's arrogance and sends the king a Divine Text Message (a DTM). A hand appeared and wrote on the wall, "MENEY, MENEY, TIKKEL UPHARSIN."
So, what does this divine "tagging" of the kings banquet hall mean? Well, like all text messages this one needed interpretation and the state magicians couldn't do it; but Daniel could. He told the King that this DTM meant: "You have been weighed in the balance and found deficit." Sure enough the king did not pay attention to the message and that very night Darius the Mede killed Belshazzar and took over his kingdom.
Being weighed in the balance corresponds to the "ten days of awe" between Rosh Hashanna (the new year) and Yom Kippur (the day of judgment) when Jews search their souls and repent of their wrong doings so God will write them in his book of life for the coming year. Those who don't repent of their wrong-doings are written in the book of death (yes, the sovereign God of the universe has that power).
Today, America is in the balance, we are being weighed; our lives are being scrutinized. It is our last chance to reverse course, to repent, before the book is sealed. It is interesting that this dire financial crisis started on this year's Rosh Hashanna. Have we been given a sign, written on the wall (Wall Street's big board). Do we have just a few days to change our ways?...
That which is express or explicit is that which is unfolded, so that it may not be obscure or doubtful. For those with eyes to see this moment in history, the handwriting is on the wall. Not just an obscure expression but an express message to leaders of this nation; repent or perish. The foreigners at your gates are just waiting for your collapse.
Will we wake up in the morning to find our enemies inside the walls, putting an end to our pagan party.
For Belshazzar it was too late by the time he got his DTM. We can only hope that for us, under God's Spirit of Grace, He will somehow save us from ourselves. But it don't look good in the hood.
