The Three Lords of Nehalem Bay
We gave Lewis & Clark rest
These white lords of the East.
They thanked us by stealing our canoe.
Anson Dart gave us a treaty
The white fathers of the East said No!
There gone now, but their sons still say No!
We remain
Our lords still stand by the bay,
The Nehalem still stand by the bay.
On Treaties
and Ironies On a Fall day in late 2005, coming home from a visit to the relatives up in Washington state, I came across the three rock stacks pictured here. Only later did I learn the story of an early treaty made in this area.History is littered with treaties. But, for the most part, they are not treaties fulfilled, but rather treaties broken. Sadly, many of these are ones the caucasion tribes of Europe have made. The treaty story between the north coast tribes of Oregon and the white tribes from the east is one such tale. Promises made and then broken. And it still goes on today.Fate has a grand sense of fair play however. After many years of struggle these tribes have finally gained most of their rights back. But more importantly, they own all the casinos.
